Research grants

CIMA’s charter to advance the science of management accountancy forms the core of our academic research strategy and guides our research goals. CIMA is keen to identify and work with academics and practitioners who are doing research in the area of management accounting and can offer insight into different subject areas. Each application is judged on its academic rigour, quality, originality and potential contribution to CIMA’s research objectives and accountants in business.

Types of research grants

CIMA provides three different kinds of research grant - Topic Specific , Ad-hoc and Seedcorn. Our next topic specific call is scheduled for 2018. OUR AD-HOC FUNDING SCHEME IS CURRENTLY ON HOLD AND WE WILL NOT BE ACCEPTING ANY MORE STAGE ONE APPLICATIONS IN 2017. More information is provided below

Ad-hoc research grants

Ad-hoc research grants proposals must be innovative and present a novel opportunity for CIMA. The project budget should not exceed GBP40,000 and the project must be completed within 18 months.

The adhoc process is different to our topic-led initiatives because:

  1. It allows researchers to put forward innovative proposals that fall outside the topic areas of CIMA’s main research initiatives.
  2. It provides an opportunity for researchers to put forward grant proposals outside the set timelines that the topic led initiatives demand.

CIMA's ad-hoc grant process takes place in two stages:

Stage one

The applicant needs to complete a two-page application form which should provide CIMA with a project outline, proposed outputs and demonstrate how the project will be of benefit to CIMA. These can be submitted at any time throughout the year.

If an applicant’s stage 1 application is successful, the research team will be notified and the proposal will progress to the next stage.

Stage two

The applicant will be asked to complete a more comprehensive form. This form will be sent directly to the applicant by CIMA (please note that this form will not be available on the CIMA website - it will only be sent via email to applicants who have completed stage one).

All completed proposals will be assessed by a panel of external impartial experts each quarter. Applicants will then be notified within six weeks of the review date if they have been successful or not. Successful applicants may be asked to attend an interview at CIMA to discuss their research further before funding is offered.

Please note that there is a maximum number of stage two applications that can be reviewed at each panel, after which they will be rolled over into the next review period.
