Abdelgader Giha

Assets and Budget Lead Accountant, Qatar Petroleum

Abdelgader Giha, assets and budget lead accountant, Qatar Petroleum

Abdelgader Giha, assets and budget lead accountant for Qatar Petroleum, is responsible for the verification of budgets and assets, creating budget guidelines and general budget management.

Seeking a more thorough understanding of the reporting elements of Islamic finance, Abdelgader enrolled on the CIMA diploma in Islamic finance. He speaks about how it has assisted his career.

What does your role involve?
My main responsibilities include budget and asset verification; department training coordination; budget guidelines; submission, discussion, final submission and modifications of budgetary aspects; and monitoring the budget for the whole financial year. I am also the asset verification custodian for the whole industry.

Additionally, I set training targets with my head of department, in consultation with our training department.

Why did you choose to enrol in the CIMA Diploma in Islamic finance?
I chose the diploma because of the global recognition and great reputation of the CIMA brand, and also as the study language is English; I previously lived in Manchester.

'I chose the diploma in Islamic finance because of the global recognition of CIMA’

What kind of challenges did you face in your work before you studied Islamic finance, and how has the diploma helped overcome them?
Essentially, I lacked knowledge in the reporting elements of Islamic finance. This issue was explained on a theoretical basis in the certificate entitled ‘accounting for Islamic financial institutions’.

How does the diploma assist your career?
The diploma has increased my knowledge, as the majority of certificates are highly applicable to our financial guidelines (reporting).

What most impressed you about the diploma?
Three particular things impressed me: the study materials, particularly the Q&A sections; the study of key points; and the excellent level of communication between the CIMA offices, the British Council and myself.

'The diploma has complemented my previous banking experience’

What are the greatest benefits of having an Islamic finance qualification?
I can use the diploma if I decide to move in to the Islamic finance environment. Islamic finance is well established in the Middle East area and Gulf countries. (HSBC-Amanah is already found in all Arabian Gulf counties, especially Bahrain, which the central point for our business.)

I also now have a better knowledge of Islamic finance for use while discussing banking issues with friends and others. Additionally, the diploma has complemented my previous banking experience.

Did you find the course convenient? How long did it take you to complete?
Very much so. I recommended the diploma to my friends and contacts; some of them are bankers and are considering enrolling, due to the convenient and flexible self study aspect of the qualification.

’I recommended the diploma to my friends and contacts’

The course took seven months to complete.

How do you use the knowledge on a day to day basis in your job?
It has improved the way I carry out my day to day duties overall, and these changes have been observed by my colleagues.
