CIMA recognises Dr Kelvin Wong with honorary Fellowship

15 February 2023, Hong Kong – The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), has awarded an honorary CIMA Fellowship to Dr Kelvin Wong, SBS, JP, Chairman of the Accounting and Financial Reporting Council (AFRC) in Hong Kong. Presented by Jasper Chung, ACMA, CGMA, Chairman of AICPA & CIMA’s Hong Kong Area Committee, this award celebrates his contributions and achievements in the accounting, finance and business community in Hong Kong and their alignment with the values and vision of AICPA & CIMA to empower those in the profession with trust, opportunities, and prosperity.

CIMA is the world’s largest professional body of management accountants and, together with the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA), is a founding member of the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants, representing just under 689,000 AIPCA and CIMA members, candidates and engaged professionals across the world.

Dr Kelvin Wong, SBS, JP, Chairman of the Accounting and Financial Reporting Council (AFRC) said, “It is my honour to receive the honorary CIMA fellowship. I feel deeply grateful that our work at the AFRC has been recognized. As the spearhead and thought-leader of the accounting profession, the Council and its staffs devoted themselves to leading the accounting profession to constantly raise the level of quality of professional accountants, and thus protect the public interest. The honorary fellowship is more than just a personal accolade. It is also a recognition of the effective regulatory work done by the entire AFRC team.”

Jasper Chung, ACMA, CGMA, Chairman of the Hong Kong Area Committee at AICPA & CIMA, together as the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants, said, “Dr Wong is a high achiever and a true leader in the accounting, finance and business sectors in Hong Kong. We are pleased to recognise him with an honorary CIMA Fellowship for his exceptional contributions to the accounting and finance profession in Hong Kong over the past 30 years.”

In addition to his role as Chairman of the AFRC, Dr Kelvin Wong is an Executive Director of COSCO SHIPPING Ports Limited and an Independent Non-Executive Director of two listed companies in Hong Kong.

Dr Wong is also the past Chairman of The Hong Kong Institute of Directors, and a member of the Operations Review Committee of the Independent Commission Against Corruption. He was a Non-Executive Director of the Securities and Futures Commission (2012-2018), the Chairman of the Investor Education Centre (2017-2018), a member of the Main Board and GEM Listing Committees of The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited (2007-2013) and a member of the Standing Committee on Company Law Reform (2010-2016).

As the Chairman of the AFRC, Dr Wong has made significant contributions to Hong Kong’s regulatory reforms of the accounting profession in 2019 and 2022. He has also been devoted to promoting good corporate governance and quality of Hong Kong’s financial markets. Dr Wong’s constructive advice and insights in the formulation and implementation of policies in financial regulation are conducive to strengthening Hong Kong's status as a competitive international financial centre.

Dr Wong holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Andrews University in Michigan, US, and a Doctor of Business Administration degree from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
