Detailed discussion topics

Day 1

Business value of Project Management

Looking for a way to stay ahead of the pack in today’s competitive and chaotic global economy, companies are turning to project management to consistently deliver business results.  Disciplined project management starts at the portfolio level, where the strategic vision drives initial investments and where value measures are established. A fully aligned project, program and portfolio management strategy encompasses the entire organisation, dictating project execution at every level and aiming to deliver value at each step along the way.

Case study discussion

In the real world, project management problems are usually dynamic in nature. They call for some immediate action, with further analysis and decisions delayed until some later time. Project managers are rarely able to wrap up their problems, put them away, and go on to the "next case."  In contrast, these real world project cases would provide a hands on approach on project management throughout the rest of the sections.

Scope and its implications to a project

Balancing these functional elements by a project manager, hence when completed, make up the end deliverable for the project with a successful closure.
Tool kit to identify scope up front so as to give the project the best chance of success. Progressive elaboration to fine tune the elements such that it eliminates the "scope creep."

Day 2

Time: the least flexible constraint

Why “time” becomes a commodity that we always need more of desperately. Time is one of the three triple constraints and any deviation from the schedule has an effect on the cost and scope of a project.  A took kit will be formed based on the cases above, which will help the project managers to manage time to increase effectiveness and productivity.

Cost: extremely sensitive to time

Cost management is concerned with the process of planning and controlling the budget of a project. It includes activities such as planning, estimating, budgeting, financing, funding, managing, and controlling costs so that the project can be completed within the approved budget.  A tool kit encompasses with Assessing financial value of a project, Estimation and Budgeting, Baselining.
