Tell us about your current role and what is the most interesting part of your job?
Currently, I am assisting the CFO in finance and investment/project evaluation functions. The most interesting part of my job is I get to learn more on investment/project evaluations in various types of industries. I also get to meet our company’s stakeholders from China, Mexico, Indonesia and Singapore and I find it interesting to get to know people from various places.
What was the motivating factor that prompted you to pursue the CIMA-MIA Strategic Leaders Programme?
The recent report by the Committee to Strengthen the Accountancy Profession (CSAP) encouraged me to take up a professional qualification in accountancy. Apart from that, I have been a Chartered Accountant for almost 10 years without any professional degree. Therefore, I decided that it is time for me to go back to school to earn myself a professional qualification and I accepted CIMA’s challenge through the CIMA-MIA Strategic Leaders Programme.
Why did you choose CIMA and not other professional accounting programmes?
I chose CIMA because the syllabus relates more to my current job.
Was it a tough journey pursuing the last exam of the CIMA qualification? Describe your journey – how do you balance work and study, how much time do you spend studying and which study materials did you use?
It is tough considering that I have to balance work, family and studies. Moreover, it has been more than 15 years that I have not studied for exams. Normally, I would spend at least two hours a day after dinner to study on weekdays and four hours on weekends. I’m using Astranti online study materials and notes from tutors (Dilshad and Andrew).
Is there anything in particular that students should look out for when sitting for the CIMA Strategic Case Study exam?
Students should try to study as much as they can on real life examples pertaining to the industry that is given in the pre-seen material. It will help to increase their understanding of the case study that is given. Practise lots of mock-exams to get the ‘feel’ of what is expected during the exam day. During the exam, try to give a real life example for each main point that you are elaborating. When answering questions 2 and 3, try to relate your previous answers or scenario to the following questions for the integration marks.
What advice would you give to aspiring students who are keen on building a career as management accountants?
Before venturing into management accounting, ask yourself whether you really have an interest in the field. The next question should be whether you think that it gives you value in climbing the corporate ladder. If the answer to both questions is a ‘yes’, then you are heading in the right path.
Now that you are a CIMA member and a CGMA – what value would it bring to you?
It gives me more value in knowing that the corporate world out there values people with a global connection especially in management accounting.
How would the CIMA qualification be of help to you in your work or career?
CIMA provides me with extensive knowledge that is made available to all its members. It also complements my work and career to enable me to achieve success.
