You have completed all the CIMA exams and are now on your way to being a CIMA member and a CGMA. Many have said that the exams are tough. Can we have your perspective on the exams?

The exams are not tough and certainly not easy as well. I believe if the right efforts were put in, we all can just do it right. The exams are not really book-based so studying theories in the books won't guarantee you a pass. You need to develop good thinking skills. Lots of reading and understanding on the case study material will be helpful.

How can a CIMA student prepare better for the exams? Which resources did you find most helpful?w

CIMA students can prepare better for the exams with the relevant/official study texts, mock exams, past year questions and answers, post exam guides and CIMA revision classes. Past year questions and answers provide guidance on what is required in your answers and post exam guides allow you to   understand where a student had gone wrong.

Why did you choose to study CIMA?

In college, there were only two options available - either ACCA or CIMA. I am not an account, tax or audit person; instead, my interest is in costing, management and finance. Thus, I chose CIMA because what it offered was similar to my interests.

What competitive edge does CIMA give you when applying for a job? Or how do you see CIMA contributing to your future career progression?

By scrolling through Jobstreet or any job search websites, we can see that there is an increasing number of employers recognising CIMA today and this is an advantage for a person looking for a job with a CIMA qualification.

In your view, how does CIMA help prepare you for the ‘real’ world of business?

I would say that the structure of the CIMA syllabus is very relevant to the business world today. Whatever I have studied is not wasted as it is being applied in my work. I have been working for the past two years and I’m glad that I am equipped with the necessary knowledge. The knowledge has helped me tremendously with my daily tasks and ad hoc analyses. Thank you, CIMA.
