Tell us about your current role at Wesfarmers and what do you enjoy most about your role?
I am currently the Chief Financial Officer of Wesfarmers’ Chemicals, Energy and Fertiliser businesses and have responsibility for the finance, IT, procurement and compliance functions. I most enjoy the variety of challenges provided by my role. Operating across a range of sectors and business functions, each affected by changing external environments, means that no two days are the same and keeps the role interesting.
How did CIMA help you to get to this point in your journey?
After I completed my Masters in Chemistry I decided to follow a career in commerce, spending time working in management consultancy as well as a range of commercial roles. I completed the CIMA qualification, via home study, while I was working as it provided me with a recognised qualification to complement my learning ‘on the job’. The wide range of topics covered in the CIMA qualification from the core accounting knowledge through to more strategic problem solving has provided great support when dealing with new situations.
What’s the best thing about being a CIMA member?
CIMA membership provides access to a wide range of resources and timely updates on new trends impacting finance professionals.
What competitive edge would a student get by studying the CIMA qualification?
The CIMA qualification is globally recognised for its quality and breath. I believe it is a stand out for professionals who may have taken a non-commerce/accounting path at university due to its three tiered entry level structure. This allows students to complement technical knowledge in their chosen field with a well-rounded business qualification, equipping them with a sound theoretical grounding to support learning in the workplace.
