Update from Ciaran Phelan, Head of Ireland
Welcome to our Winter edition of Members Plus.
As we come to the end of the year and emerge from the era of COVID-19, I would like to draw attention to the many achievements of CIMA Ireland during 2021.
Firstly, we are very pleased with our performance over the last 10 months. New student numbers are strong and we are particularly proud of the number of students who have chosen our new CGMA Financial Leadership Program platform as their route to achieving the CGMA designation.
As we all know, FLP is the future of learning. Students can progress through both continual assessment and examination, as opposed to just examination. Feedback on the program has been extremely positive and exam results to date have been very encouraging. CIMA students have been able to progress through the qualification despite many exam centres closed due to COVID19.
CIMA students can sit their exams from the comfort and safety of their homes, ensuring students can continue to progress towards their qualification and ultimate membership.
While student numbers and progressing students to membership is only one half of our business, supporting our members is key to our development. We do this through our excellent CGMA store and member events.
With COVID-19 ruling out face-to-face, we have moved the majority of our events online. Despite the copious amount of virtual events around, our numbers have been phenomenal and, going forward, the virtual platform will be our main way of communication with our members and students. It’s far more convenient for members to attend from their chosen location. Best of all, if they cannot attend, all CPD webinars are recorded and accessible on our website.
At this point I would like to express my sincere thanks to all members who volunteer their time to support CIMA and other members on our four regional committees.
Their advice and support ensure we are delivering content so that members will gain much needed ‘added-value content’ in our post-pandemic world.
We also get invaluable support from our Ireland panel under the chair of Margaret Healy. Thank you all for your time and, most importantly, your invaluable assistance which helps us support our students and members.
For the remainder of the year, our focus will be on growing students on the FLP platform, supporting students with their progression through the qualification and delivering quality CPD for you, our members.
Have a great rest of the year and stay safe!

Members in Practice: Cyber security – what you should consider
It will come as no surprise that we find ourselves delving into the area of online security and cybercrime. In Ireland, we are all only too aware of the recent HSE ransomware attack, however exposure to potential data breaches and other forms of online fraud are certainly not limited to large organisations.
Nothing is Perfect: A Guide To Competency-Based Interviews
Nothing is ever perfect, and CBIs are no exception. Here, however, are a few tips and observations that might help both interviewers and interviewees to get the best out of the process.
Winter Wonderland or one of Discontent?
As the evenings shorten and close in, there is a semblance of normality returning to business for most after a surreal 18 months. Government supports have protected many businesses, but the pandemic period has been uneven in its impact. Many firms have suffered minimal impact, some have even thrived but others such as hospitality and, particularly, the arts and live entertainment have had a very difficult time.
Finance Digitalisation: How to Get Started & The Benefits
Christopher Devaney ACMA CGMA is a Senior Strategic Finance Analyst at Intel Ireland and an international member of the DARC (Data Analytics Reporting Centre of Excellence) team at Intel, explains how the finance function is undergoing a radical transformation as market disruptions, digitalisation and increased expectations converge. And, how virtually every role within the finance function will be redefined in the next five years.
Is Finance Business Partnering Alive and Functioning in SMEs? The Jury is Out!
Lots has been written about Finance Business Partnering – and an Accountants key role in helping ‘better’ decisions be made within the business they work in. However, a couple of straw polls held during the Summer of 2021 raise questions as to how often the in-house Accountants in these businesses can or do exert much influence on decisions made.
