An Expert’s Advice to CPD Monitoring

Starting 1 March, new regulations designed to strengthen CIMA’s Continuing Professional Development (CPD) compliance, go into play.

I met with Ingrid Benjamin, CPD Monitoring specialist at CIMA, to talk about CPD. She shared how you can prepare.

What is CPD?

All CIMA members are required to keep learning throughout their career. Ongoing learning allows you to maintain and develop your skills, knowledge and experience, making you ready to meet the requirements of your current role and any role you want to move into. CPD differentiates you from the average Joe and helps meet your career aspirations. So, if you’re looking for a way to reach greater success, continuing professional development (CPD) is a proven route.

Why do you monitor members’ CPD?

To protect the public interest and to preserve the designation you worked so hard to achieve, we select a random sample of members’ CPD records to be monitored each year.  

Whilst it’s understandable that some members may be nervous about being monitored, there’s no need to worry. CPD monitoring provides you with an opportunity to showcase all your hard work and achievements throughout the year.

How do members learn if they’ve been selected?

Letters or emails will be sent to all those randomly selected for CPD monitoring in March 2020. These letters will be sent to both Members in Business and Members in Practice. The letter will include a request for you to submit your CPD record for the last 12 months (March 2019 – March 2020).

In response, you can either submit your CPD record via the Competency and Learning website, or you can confirm that you work for an accredited employer.

It’s essential that you submit your CPD record by the deadline stated in the letter. If you miss the deadline, you will be deemed non-compliant which will result in further action.

How can members prepare?

Here’s five things you can do today.

  1. Review the CPD requirements through this helpful and informative site.
  2. Check whether your employer is accredited. CIMA members working for accredited employers — known as a Premier Partner or CIMA Development Quality Partner — can use their personal development plan/appraisal as evidence of CPD compliance. If your employer isn’t listed, and you think they should be, contact us.  If your employer is listed, please make sure your employment details are current in My CIMA.
  3. Start making a list of any learning and development you’ve completed in the last 12 months and what you learnt. Learning activities can be formal (e.g., a course or conference) or informal (e.g., reading, giving presentations or training a colleague). If you haven’t done quite as much development as you might have liked, CPD resources are available to you on the CIMA site.
  4. Log into the Competency and Learning website and enter your first learning activity. It should take about 10 minutes. If you need help, this document outlines how to record your CPD. Once you’ve added your first activity, log in regularly to add new activities and update those you’ve completed.
  5. Lastly, the FAQs may answer remaining questions.
