Handling HMRC investigations


Tax Investigations specialist Mala Kapacee will talk through the various types on enquiries instigated by HMRC and how they can be dealt with to obtain the best result for your clients.

Mala will look at how tax returns are selected for investigation and ways to minimise the risk. She will also discuss how responses to HMRC can result in different outcomes, for example further queries by HMRC or alternatively, shutting down areas of the investigation.

Mala Kapacee

Mala is a Chartered Tax Adviser and Director of London Tax Network Ltd, a specialist Tax Investigations Consultancy. Her experience includes resolving tax enquiries, CoP8 and 9 Investigations as well as disclosures for a range of taxes and situations; self-employment, property, owner managed businesses and non-UK domiciled individuals.

She is a well-known tax author, having had several articles published by Taxation Magazine, International Tax Review, Bloomberg Tax, Bloomsbury Professional and Tax Adviser. Mala lectures regularly and has spoken at the CIOT Indirect Taxes Conference on VAT Investigations and at the CIMA on IR35 in 2020. 
Mala was recently shortlisted as finalist for “Best Rising Star in Tax” as part of Tolleys Taxation Awards 2020. The Awards are known for identifying excellence in tax. The award demonstrates Mala’s commitment to the tax profession as well as her technical excellence as supported by testimonials from clients and other tax experts.
Mala founded the London Tax Society in 2017 and actively encourages networking and technical development for young professionals.
