Within this increasing area of focus, you can promote the capability in your business to improve psychological, emotional and physical resilience. This helps you to move on from difficult, challenging and stressful situations while reducing their long-term negative impact.

Who should attend?
This course is aimed at those who want to increase their ability to deal with setbacks, adapt well to change and establish a good work-life balance. It is also suitable for managers looking to learn how to support and develop the resilience of those they manage.

What you will gain
Following this course, you will be able to: 

  • Build knowledge and understanding of the concept of resilience, how it is defined, the factors that influence resilience, how it manifests itself, its links to mental health and how it applies to organisational effectiveness
  • Assess and reflect on individual levels of resilience and its impact on personal goals
  • Gain practical knowledge of how to develop and manage resilience

Programme outline
The course is delivered as follows:

  • One hour of pre-course work to introduce the course and online resources
  • 3 x two-hour live sessions, approximately one week apart
  • Six hours of self-study, between sessions

Session 1
Resilience enables individual and teams to function and adapt in the face of adversity and/or disruptive changes. In this unit we will examine the concept of resilience, learn how resilience manifests itself, and consider its links to mental health and how it applies to organisational effectiveness. By the end of this live session, you should be able to:

  • Define resilience
  • Identify signs of resilience or the lack of resilience
  • Evaluate the individual and organisational effects of low/high resilience

Session 2
Resilience is not a fixed trait as it can be learned and cultivated. In this unit we examine key factors that influence resilience and evaluate the strategies for developing it. By the end of this live session, you should be able to:

  • Identify what factors cause resilience to vary
  • Examine personal strategies which can help to increase resilience
  • Examine organisational strategies which can help to increase resilience

Session 3
While there are general principles and strategies that help to increase resilience, it is important for individuals and teams to learn what works best for them in different situations. Evaluating strategies to increase resilience and tailoring them to the person and environment is key to ensuring development. By the end of this live session, you should be able to:

  • Reflect on individual and team resilience
  • Identify the kinds of challenges that bring out the need for resilience and think of specific strategies which could help develop resilience in their environment
  • Develop a plan to implement the development of resilience within your organisation
