Emotional Intelligence


This course helps you develop the skills to understand, use and manage emotions in a constructive way, learning to control individual stress levels and those of others in a personal and business context. This allows your business to find solutions to challenges and defuse conflict, while creating effective working relationships.

Who should attend?
This course is aimed at those who want to increase their self-awareness and self-regulation, alongside learning how to create positive interactions, defuse conflict and make decisions free of emotional biases.

Following this course, you will be able to:

  • Build knowledge and understanding on what emotional intelligence is, how it manifests itself and how it is measured
  • Reflect on personal levels of emotional intelligence, how it influences the experience and management of stressful situations, and how it affects individual career success
  • Gain practical knowledge of how to develop and manage emotional intelligence

Programme outline
The course is delivered as follows:

  • One hour of pre-course work to introduce the course and online resources
  • 3 x two-hour live sessions, approximately one week apart
  • Six hours of self-study, between sessions

Session 1
Emotional intelligence (EI) is a key ability related to understanding and managing individual emotions. EI is of great importance in the workplace as it relates to better communication and performance for both individuals and teams. In this unit we will examine the concept of emotional intelligence, the different forms of emotional expression and how EI contributes to individual and organisational performance, conflict management and wellbeing. By the end of this live session, you should be able to:

  • Define emotional intelligence
  • Identify forms of emotional expression
  • Evaluate the individual and organisational effects of low/high EI

Session 2
Emotional intelligence consists of a group of abilities. In this unit we examine the main competencies related to the understanding of individual emotions and those in others, while exploring strategies for observing/exploring emotional intelligence. By the end of this live session, you should be able to:

  • Produce an account of the competencies related to understanding individual and others’ emotions
  • List strategies for exploring individual emotional intelligence and in others
  • Reflect and monitor individual emotions and the emotions of others

Session 3
Building on the ability to reflect on emotional intelligence in this session will cover not only the differences in EI across individuals and teams, but also the process by which people control emotions. Emotional regulation is crucial to the facilitation of sound performance and wellbeing. Strategies of developing EI will also be discussed and evaluated. By the end of this live session, you should be able to:

  • Define emotional regulation and identify challenges associated with its presence individually or within a team
  • Identify and evaluate strategies for EI development
  • Develop a plan to implement the development of EI within a workplace
