Excel Power business intelligence tools

This one day course covers the newly introduced range of Excel Power BI tools (Power Business Intelligence). Learn how to use all of these latest features introduced in Excel which will help in business processing, data analysis, financial reporting, and with day-to-day decision making.

Who should attend?
The course material includes advanced features of Excel and participants will gain the maximum benefit from this course if they are already competent spreadsheet users. It is recommended that they already have attended Data analysis with Excel – advanced, or have the equivalent level of knowledge.

At a minimum, it is assumed that participants will know how to do some of the following:

  • navigate confidently in Excel
  • an understanding of the benefits in nesting functions
  • work with inherited spreadsheets from others
  • enjoy using Excel for analysis and similar business processes, using tools such as PivotTables

This one day course covers the newly introduced range of Excel Power BI tools (Power Business Intelligence). Learn how to use all of these latest features introduced in Excel which will help in business processing, data analysis, financial reporting, and with day-to-day decision making. Become confident with what Microsoft are now including as standard, and with what is now starting to become a benchmark in advanced Excel skills.

This course is very hands-on with Excel, and offers all the advice and software practice utilising these advanced tools which include building queries to extract, transform, and load data, and also to create elegant data models with PowerPivot. This involves analysing multiple data sets, working with cross-sectional data, merging different sets to create one data model, and using a key range of brand new formulas in Excel.

The course also covers an introduction into the world of DAX formulas (Data Analysis Expressions), designed to work with relational data and perform dynamic aggregation.

Programme outline

  • Best practice in producing quality reports; picking up sample data and creating a report
  • Introduction to PowerPivot, including: how PowerPivot differs from a PivotTable; filtering rows/columns; data and diagram view; combining data sources
  • PowerPivot data models, including: create a PowerPivot data model; extract meaningful insight from a data model; dynamic filters with slicers and timelines; creating and editing data relationships
  • Get data / power import from external sources, including: what is Power Query and when to use it; query editor overview; querying a database; managing data sources and queries; column, row and calculated transform actions
  • Further Power Query features, including: output to a PowerPivot data model; automate reoccurring tasks; the ‘M’ language
  • Power Map, including setup and overview of Power Map; localising data and geographic plots across the globe; types of map; more advanced tools in Power Map; introduction to DAX (BI) functions; putting it all together; bonus topics; homework topics for further study

Note that the course content is compatible with the following versions of Excel: Excel 2013 Professional Plus, Excel 2016 Professional Plus, Office 365 ProPlus.

All exercises and project files used on the course will be available to take home.

Information for Online Live dates
Please read the following guidance carefully, which applies only if you are attending this course online:

  • In addition to the Online Classroom, you will need to have your own version of Excel open to complete the exercises
  • It does prove to be challenging to follow-on with the exercises using only 1 screen as you will need to be regularly switching between open windows. We recommend to either:
  • Extend from a computer to a 2nd screen - please refer to this link for guidance on how to correctly setup a second monitor https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4340331/windows-10-set-up-dual-monitors or
  • Use 2 computers, or
  • Use a tablet for the online classroom and a computer for the Excel
  • Please note that our courses are based on Excel for Windows and it is recommended that you are using at least Excel 2010 or a later version. MAC users are welcome but please note that there may be some tools and functionality that will differ from what is being presented. The presenter will accommodate for MAC versions on the course.

The course starts at 9.30 am. Lunch and refreshments are included.
