From strategy to action - using the balanced scorecard

Category: MASTER COURSE

This course shows how the balanced scorecard approach can be used to bridge the gap between the strategic or business plan and day to day action.

Who should attend?

Executing a strategic or business plan to achieve stated goals is one of the hardest tasks to complete in business. The balanced scorecard approach is one way by which managers can bridge the gap between the plan and day to day action. This course is for managers involved in translating business plans into day to day performance management, results measurement and strategic planning.

What you will gain

  • Appreciation of the advantages and limitations of a balanced scorecard approach.
  • Understanding of the key elements of the scorecard and how they seek to address some of the weaknesses of traditional strategy implementation techniques.
  • Understanding the importance of monitoring both financial and non-financial performance measures and how they can be used to both report historic and predict future performance.
  • Ability to create non-financial measures of performance that are relevant to their company.
  • Ability to link a company’s vision and mission statements to the creation of a balanced scorecard.
  • Practice at creating a strategy map for both a case study company and for their own company.
  • Appreciation of how to successfully implement a balanced scorecard approach into an organisation.
  • Understanding of some of the likely practical issues that will need to be addressed and how to go about addressing them.
  • Understanding the relative merits of a balanced scorecard approach and how it can be used either instead of or alongside existing approaches to strategy implementation.

Programme outline

Strategy to implementation: Introduction to the idea of a balanced scorecard, why it is needed and how it compares or links to other implementation techniques. Introduction to the key elements of the balanced scorecard e.g. strategy map, four perspectives and action plan and how they link to a company’s vision and mission.

The four perspectives - financial, customer, internal and learning: Description of the four perspectives and an examination of each one, in some detail, to help delegates understand each one and then consider them in the context of their own organisation. Introduction to case study material to aid understanding of the concepts and how they are used in other organisations.

How to create a strategy map and balanced scorecard: Introduction to the idea of cause and effect that lies at the heart of the BS approach. Delegates will work on case study material to help understand how to link a company’s strategic vision to the use of a balanced scorecard. Delegates will then work on linking their own company’s vision and mission statements to the creation of a strategy map and balanced scorecard.

How to introduce the balanced scorecard into a company: The final session looks at the practical issues surrounding the introduction and successful implementation of a balanced scorecard. It explores how the scorecard can be used both at board level and then throughout the organisation. It will consider how the scorecard links with other performance management techniques and consider their relative strengths and weaknesses.

Examples will be discussed of how companies have used and adapted the BS method to meet their own requirements. Discussion and understanding of the practical steps that can be taken to benefit from the BS method.

The course starts at 9.30am. Lunch and refreshments are included.
6 CPD hours (where applicable).
