Lean in finance and operations

Category: LOCAL EVENT

This session will help client teams to harness the power of Lean thinking in their finance teams and functions.

The first session of the day will be presented by Stephen Duffy from Act Lean Ltd. Stephen is a specialist UK-based consultant that helps organisations simplify what they do by coaching them to focus better on customer value and operational effectiveness.

During this session Stephen will share and discuss:

Clarity on what Lean means (demystifying what Lean is and isn’t!) and also what using it can achieve in finance, and in wider business operations
A practical insight on how to quickly get benefits from adopting simple Lean techniques
A better understanding of how developing Lean skills and capabilities can help members improve their personal capital and value to businesses, in a world of increasing automation, to make a real difference to their personal value to business.

The second session of the day will be led by Nick Smith, ACMA, CGMA, Managing Director, STILL Materials Handling Ltd.

During this session Nick will share and discuss:

The STILL UK story and how Lean has been adopted
Provide a real life example of how lean does not need to be complicated and can benefit organisations
How the finance function can help enhance and support its implementation and effectiveness.

This event will be interactive and engaging and allow attendees to take away practical tips and tricks that can be used straight away, without having to wait for complex and long-winded Six-Sigma system certifications.

Stephen Duffy, Act Lean Ltd
Stephen has led dozens of transformation and improvement programmes for businesses across the world over the last 20+ years, whilst in leading roles at PW/PwC and Bearing Point. This experience led him to set up Act Lean, and to continue managing improvement networks for clients in finance and related areas, and advising and coaching clients and teams on their programmes.

He had guest lectured on these topics at conferences and universities across the UK and Europe and runs quarterly networking events in the UK to share experience of how to do this effectively.

Nick Smith, ACMA, CGMA, Managing Director, STILL Materials Handling Ltd
Nick started his working history in the world of finance from leaving school in 1989.  At that point, Nick enrolled onto the AAT course and then onto the CIMA course (both via home study tutorials).  This gave Nick the experience of working within various finance functions (factory management accounting, treasury, audit, practice accounts etc.), whilst building up his academic qualification.

This platform of experience and qualification enabled a transition into leadership roles within finance and then more commercial roles.  This extended into supporting overseas operations, acquisitions & disposals.  In 2008, Nick took over the role of Managing Director of STILL and has been there for 10 years.
STILL is a worldwide provider of intralogistics solutions (forklifts, warehousing equipment, automation, racking etc.). Nick is an advocate of Lean and has implemented it within STILL UK.

STILL UK is focused on the supply of sales, service, rental and parts, supported by its own direct network and independent dealer channel.  Two thirds of its 220 employees are field based, supporting customers across the UK & Ireland.  Manufacturing of its products are made overseas (predominately Germany, Italy & France).  Since 2008, the UK business has grown from £28m to £70m turnover, with 220 employees. Its UK headquarters are based in Exeter, supported by an operation in Leyland.
