This half-day course will cover all areas of residential property including domestic, charitable and residential buildings. Sales, lettings, conversions, alterations and refurbishments are dealt with, as are listed buildings and those owned by housing associations. The course will also consider the VAT position of those who own or develop buildings as well as the providers of construction and related services.

Geoff Sykes BA FCA CTA

After qualifying with a small firm, Geoff spent ten years in London with Deloittes, originally as a tax specialist, and later as National Tax Training Manager.  For the next twenty years he was a tax partner in a medium sized firm based in Leeds and Kendal, advising a range of business and personal clients on all aspects of tax.  He also has experience as a company director and as a director of a retail co-operative society.

  • obtaining the benefit of zero rating and/or reduced rating on construction, conversion or refurbishment work
  • exempt and taxable sales and letting of residential property
  • the rules for DIY builders and converters
  • alterations and reconstructions of listed buildings
  • special reliefs for charities and housing associations
  • VAT on caravans and holiday homes
  • structuring transactions to maximise the benefit of exemption or zero rating.

The course will start at 9.30am, with registration and coffee from 9.00am, and end at 12.45pm. Refreshments are provided.
