Financial instruments - an introduction for the non-financial sector

Don't be fooled into thinking that only the financial sector will be affected by the financial instruments standards. Their impact is wide ranging and covers everyday matters, such as an entity's investing activities and trade receivables and payables, as well as more complex issues such as accounting for convertible debentures, derivatives and hedging.

This course will benefit anyone who needs to get up to speed on how IAS 32, IAS 39 and IFRS 7 and their UK equivalents will affect their business. This course is aimed specifically at the non-financial sector.

The speaker will be drawn from a pool of subject specialists who are qualified professionals. Having worked for leading organisations they will bring their subject to life by relating the course content to real life case studies.

• The definition of financial instruments and the difference between equity instruments and financial liabilities.
• Accounting for compound financial instruments.
• Accounting for financial assets and financial liabilities.
• Recognition, initial measurement and subsequent measurement.
• Impairment and derecognition.
• The basics of hedging and embedded derivatives.

This course includes only a brief overview of IFRS 9 as the new standard has yet to be approved for use within the EU and is not likely to be mandatory until 2015. Financial instruments - IFRS 9 and the replacement of IAS 39  provides more details.

The course starts at 9.30am, with registration and coffee from 9.00am, and ends at 4.30pm. Lunch and refreshments are provided.
