CIMA Management Competition winners announced

11 July 2008

CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) held its annual CIMA Management Competition finals day on 26 June 2008 at The Guardian Newsroom in Farringdon, London.  Year 12 students from Eton College, Windsor and Year 13 students from Plymouth College, Devon have won the national competition, an annual event designed to award entrepreneurial students and to develop the business leaders of the future.

In the final, the top four teams in each age group from schools across the UK presented their reports to a judging panel of senior finance and business professionals.

The CIMA Management Competition, in partnership with Learnthings.co.uk, is open to all 16-18 year olds in schools and colleges in the UK. A team of three to four students acts as consultants for a fictional company, analysing information and making recommendations based on their findings and then producing the conclusions in a formal business report.

Each team is given a case study scenario. This year it was based on Shinkendo Oi, a fictitious product similar to the Nintendo Wii, which schools and clubs can use for sports practice.  Students were expected to undertake research into this type of product and explore what software is currently available, particularly for marketing both the console and the software to schools.

In joint second place were students from Year 12 at Ellesmere Port Catholic High School, Whitby, Cheshire and Year 13 at Thomas Alleyne's High School , Uttoxeter, Staffordshire.  Third place was shared by students from Year 12 at Bolton School Boys' Division, Bolton, Lancashire and Year 13 St Mary's Catholic School, Bishop’s Stortford, Hertfordshire.

Ray Perry, CIMA Director of Brand, said:

‘The CIMA Management Competition is a great way for students all over the UK to test their business acumen and build on their learning in the classroom.  As the competition incorporates national curriculum guidelines into the programme, it supports the Government’s endeavours to prepare our young people for working life.

‘The great level of strategic thinking shown in the submissions from all the teams demonstrates how well prepared these students will be for the world of business and I expect they will go far in their chosen fields.’
