Our policy

CIMA developed the output-based CIMA Professional Development (CPD) policy to help and support all members as they enhance and maintain their competence whilst undertaking learning and development activities.

The output-based approach was chosen after member consultation and in-depth research, and takes into account individual learning styles and preferences.  It encourages members to reflect on and evaluate what they have gained from the activity and how they can apply what they have learnt to their role. This approach also helps each member to focus on identifying activities that are relevant to their individual or future roles which will enable them to fulfil those roles more effectively.

Members can also choose the development activities that will be most beneficial to their learning style and situation, as opposed to having to undertake a certain type of activity to meet the number of hours or units prescribed by their Institute or employer.

The International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) issued an International Education Standard 7 (IES 7) in recognition of the expectations and requirements of the accountancy profession and its stakeholders.  CPD has been developed in line with, and complies with, the requirements of the IES 7.

Why is it important?
By undertaking the CPD Policy, CIMA and CIMA members will be demonstrating to our stakeholders that we are committed to lifelong learning and to maintaining and developing professional competence and observing ethical standards.

New concepts of career, changes in the employment relationship and increasing expectations on professionals all call on CIMA members to maintain and develop their skills and knowledge. As a result, this places an emphasis on the ability to adapt to sometimes radical new demands and practices. A key outcome of CPD is that members are better able to secure and enhance their employability.

The focus of CIMA Professional Development
CPD has a dual focus:

  • the quality of ongoing performance in a chosen role, whatever that role may be
  • the forward-looking career development of each individual member.

Members should address the following areas, dependent on their specific role, when formulating relevant development activities:

  • technical skills
  • knowledge and awareness of changes in the regulatory, statutory and business environment applicable to that member’s role
  • business, management and interpersonal skills.
