What is a management accountant?

There are two distinct types of accountant.

Financial accountants traditionally focus on audit, tax and reporting on past performance. Chartered management accountants, meanwhile, look forward.

They work at the heart of business. They’re the people who evaluate and interpret financial information so that they can make the strategic decisions that will shape an organisation's future.

What roles do management accountants perform?

CIMA chartered management accountants are qualified to engage in a wide variety of activities:

  • advising managers about the financial implications of project management
  • explaining the financial consequences of management decisions and suggesting actions
  • making strategic decisions and formulating business strategies to create wealth and shareholder value
  • monitoring spending and financial control
  • managing risk and business assurance
  • cost determination and financial control
  • evaluating existing financial information systems and suggesting improvements
  • conducting internal business audits and preparing periodic financial statements for managers
  • explaining the impact of the competitive landscape.

Above all, chartered management accountants are great communicators who can bring understanding and an international perspective to non-financial managers. Click here to find out about some of the jobs that chartered management accountants frequently perform.
