National award for management accounting 2008

CIMA Malaysia and the Malaysian Institute of Accountants are pleased to announce the fifth annual National award for management accounting (NAfMA). The award recognises organisations that use best practice in management accounting and promotes the application of management accounting techniques and systems in Malaysian companies, in pursuit of world class business performance.

There are three awards:

Excellence award
Top award for the organisation with the outstanding best practice in management accounting.

Best practice award
Award for fully implemented management accounting systems that set new standards or introduce innovation in the workplace. This is awarded in three categories: public listed companies, non-listed companies, non-listed SMEs.

Practice solution award
Award for the application of of the most effective management accounting system, tool or technique that has had a positive impact on daily practice.

New president for CIMA Malaysia

Chandra Mohan Balasubramaniam FCMA was elected as the new divisional president of CIMA Malaysia at the division's annual general meeting on 14 June 2008. He takes over from Michael Eow FCMA, whose two year term has expired. Chandra Mohan will serve for two years until 2010.

Chandra Mohan's experience is principally in banking and he is currently vice president, group product development of a prominent public listed bank with interests in retail and investment banking. He was previously with a local finance company, culminating as assistant general manager with a portfolio encompassing finance, treasury, IT and credit recovery. Prior to that, he was group accountant for a leading local group of colleges.

The other newly elected honorary officers of CIMA Malaysia Division are:
Francis Chan FCMA – deputy president
Jeremy Nasrulhaq FCMA – vice president
Yeo Tek Ling ACMA – honorary secretary
Lim Kian Hui FCMA – honorary treasurer

Calling all business and accounting undergraduates!

Are you up to the challenge? Join the CIMA Management Accounting Business Challenge and test your analytical and business decision making skills

The Business Challenge competition is open to all undergraduates currently pursuing programmes in accounting or business in universities and colleges in Malaysia. It consists of two phases – each team consisting of four members will submit their analysis of a given case study by email, and following an assessment by a panel of judges, the top four teams will be selected to compete in the final round on 23 August at the UEM Academy in Petaling Jaya.

In the final round, the teams will present their solutions to the case study and take part in a question and answer session with the judges. Attractive prizes await the winners, so put on your thinking caps and join us for this exciting competition.

Excellence Award in Management Accounting

Telekom Malaysia Berhad is the Excellence Award winner of the National Award for Management Accounting (NAfMA) 2007.

YB Dato' Shahrir Abdul Samad, Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, presented the NAfMA awards at a grand dinner ceremony in Kuala Lumpur on 13 December 2007.

Six other companies received two different types of award – Best Practice Award and Practice Solution Award – under the three categories of public listed companies, non-listed companies and non-listed SMEs with an annual turnover of not more than RM25 million.

Chandra Mohan Balasubramaniam, Chairman of the NAfMA Assessment Committee, said: 'with globalisation and increased technological changes, companies need to improve their value creation and overall efficiency.

'I’m glad that we have seen increasing awareness among local companies of best management accounting practices. The use of management accounting techniques and best practises were very evident amongst the nominations. 

The NAfMA awards recognise best practices in management accounting by companies in Malaysia that lead to value creation and excellent business performance.
