Professional Institute Network West Midlands
CIMA and 13 other professional institutes in the West Midlands have formed a Professional Institutes Network (PIN), to be known as PIN West Midlands (PIN WM). The aim of the network is to publicise each other's activities in order to give a wider choice of events for the benefit of all members.
You can get full information on all events taking place around the West Midlands and further information on PIN WM by going to their website http://www.pinwm.co.uk/ The information available will assist you in planning your CPD and be a valuable source of reference to what's going on in your area.
PIN West Midlands produces two booklets a year which are sent out to over 30,000 professionals in the area ranging from lawyers and accountants to IT specialists and marketers. The third publication will be ready in the next few months.
These publications are sponsored by the University of Central England in Birmingham and are aimed at publicising the work of many of the regions most influential professional bodies and highlighting the many professional development opportunities on offer across Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Staffordshire, Shropshire, and Warwickshire.
Since starting up in 2005 the group has launched a website which provides up to date information on events organised by each institute where attendance is open to non-members. Member institutes include ACCA, Birmingham Law Society, The British Computer Society, The Chartered Institute of Marketing, CIMA, CIPFA, The Chartered Institute of Public relations, The Chartered Institute of Taxation, The Institute of Chartered Accountants, Institute of Financial Services School of Finance, The Insolvency Practitioners Association and The UK IT Association.
John Kelly has recently succeeded Keith Simpson as chairman. John, a former president of Birmingham and West Midlands Society of Chartered Accountants and former local chairman of the Association of Business Recovery Professionals, is the regional managing partner in the AIM listed corporate services practice Begbies Traynor.
John originally qualified as a chartered accountant in Leicester moving to Birmingham in 1983. He has previously been a partner of Ernst & Young and Kroll before moving to Begbies Traynor in 2004. He is also a member of the Advantage West Midlands Regional Finance Forum and was instrumental in the creation of the MG Advantage Transition Fund which assisted business affected by the MG Rover failure.
John, who has a wide network of professional contacts, believes the professional community in Birmingham and the West Midlands can compete with London and has more to offer than some of the northern competitors. However, with the exception of Lord Jones of Birmingham (Digby), the professional community in Birmingham has not been as vocal about its qualities as some of its rivals.
John will seek to raise the profile of PIN WM in his year of office as it develops into the pre-eminent organisation representing the professional sector in Birmingham and the West Midlands.
Andrew Corbett, Director of PerfectArc who designed and developed the website, based in Ludlow and a member of the British Computer Society, said ‘We have been massively encouraged by the interest shown by the professions. Aside from the obvious benefits for continuous professional development, this creates wider opportunities for people across the professions to network with one another. Looking forward we are hoping to add some additional feature to the site and to promote more joint events.’
Having UCE as a sponsor has been a real boost to the group and their involvement will follow through into 2008/9, which will enable PIN WM to continue to publicise its events and issue an updated directory in the autumn.
If you are interested in the work of the network, visit the website. Feel free to get in touch with any of the member institute representatives who will be happy to provide further information.
