Examiners and markers

Why become a marker?

As a professional who cares about students and enjoys marking, you might wish to consider becoming a script marker. CIMA employs dedicated teams of markers to mark scripts, and from time to time, opportunities arise to join individual subject teams. If you might be interested in joining this team, then please read on.

What does a marker do?

A script marker is employed to mark scripts, usually on two occasions per year (the May and November exam diets). Once you have applied and been accepted as a marker, you will be sent full administrative instructions just prior to the exam about your role in the marking team. Just after the exam has been sat, you’ll receive the question paper and the marking scheme. A meeting of all markers is held approximately a week after the exam - attendance at this meeting is compulsory, and its aim is to make sure you understand the marking procedures with the result that all markers can apply the marking scheme consistently.

Once you’ve attended the meeting, you’ll have up to four weeks to mark your script allocation.

Who can do it?

CIMA has developed criteria which markers would normally be expected to meet:

Education:

First degree (at least second class). Essential
Masters degree in a relevant subject area or professional accountancy qualification for Management Accounting and Financial Management pillars. Desirable

Examining Experience:

At least two years’ prior experience in Higher Education and/or professional body of marking and setting or evaluating assessments. Essential
Relevant teaching or practitioner / consultancy experience (for the subject matter of the paper applied for). You should be currently lecturing/teaching or engaged in consultancy/practice, or have very recently retired. Essential
Professional updating in area of specialism. Essential
Demonstration of being up to date in educational and subject issues, and assessment methodology. Essential
Employed as External Examiner to a recognised programme/institution. Desirable
Other professional body faculty experience. Desirable

IT requirements

Also, as CIMA's key mechanism for communicating administrative information and for all marking-related contact is via e-mail, so you will need a minimum specification on your home Personal Computer (PC), described in marker IT capability (XLS 16KB).

If you are interested in becoming a marker for CIMA, please complete the marker application form (DOC 93KB) and e-mail this, together with a current version of your CV to assessment.faculty@cimaglobal.com.

You can apply at any time of the year, and we will acknowledge all applications.

We will retain your application for a maximum of two years – if you have not been appointed within two years you will need to reapply. If you are shortlisted, we will ask you to mark three sample scripts so that then we can assess how you apply the marking scheme and approach the assessment of candidates.

If you have any questions, please e-mail assessment.faculty@cimaglobal.com or alternatively, contact the Assessment faculty on 020 8849 2296.
