CIMA funds high-calibre, academic research projects of relevance to the science of management accountancy.
Types of research grants
CIMA provides three different types of grants:
- Topic specific research initiative grants
- Seedcorn grants
- Ad-hoc research grants
Seedcorn grants
CIMA issues a call for seedcorn research proposals once a year. Grants of up to GBP 5,000 are available. The seedcorn funding initiative for 2013 is now open.
There are two types of seedcorn funding:
Early career research grants are for:
- Researchers with experience only as research assistants
- Those without previous funding awards
- Those who have not previously acted as a principal researcher
Feasibility study grants are for:
- Experienced researchers with an idea that they want to develop
- Researchers to undertake feasibility studies as a preliminary to in-depth empirical research

Applications are open between 1 June and 31 August 2013.
Applying for seedcorn research grants
To apply for a seedcorn research grant, you will need to submit an application form for either the early career researcher or feasibility study funding stream by 31 August 2013.
Applications are assessed by CIMA’s research and development (R&D) panel. If your application is shortlisted, you will be invited to present in person or via video conference to a panel of experts and answer questions. This does not apply to seedcorn projects.
If the panel recommends your project for funding, CIMA’s General Charitable Trust will make the final decision about whether a grant will be awarded.
Topic-specific research initiative grants
Topic-specific research initiative grants are offered twice a year and are open to research teams globally. This is the main way in which CIMA funds research.
Successful projects are rigorous in their research approach, relevant to CIMA members, relevant to the science of management accountancy and in line with the CGMA innovation themes.
There is no upper funding limit, however funding awards are usually between GBP 5,000 and GBP 40,000.
Ad hoc research grants
CIMA accepts high quality ad-hoc research proposals from around the world throughout the year in exceptional circumstances.
