Some of the most successful finance professionals have failed exams. So don't be downhearted - good planning will put you on course to pass next time. Jackie Durham, education and training consultant, CIMA, shows you how.
What do you do if you failed any of your May exams?
The first thing to remember is that professional exams are different to all other exams. Many students who never failed anything before don't get through at the first attempt.
The best thing is to look forwards and begin to plan for success next time around.
How to plan
Firstly, you need to review what you did last time and evaluate what worked and what didn't.
What study method did you use? Would you have benefited from a different approach, or an additional revision course?
Getting tuition for your CIMA studies can be a good idea, so look out for CIMA Learning accredited colleges. Accredited colleges offer tuition that meets CIMA quality standards.
How was your study preparation?
Did you revise fully and practice answering lots of past exam questions under timed conditions? Did you work out marks per question and spread you time accordingly?
Past exam questions with model answers are now available to download via your MyCIMA account. You should also look at our
post exam guides for examiner feedback on the errors that students make in CIMA exams.
Support from your employerIf you're working, think about the support you got from your employer. Could they have offered a little more study leave, or arranged work placements so that your work helped with your studies?
If you feel your employer could be more supportive and/or deserves recognition for the high level of support they provide, talk to them about becoming accredited to the CIMA Training Partner scheme.
This scheme is designed to ensure that the training of Chartered Management Accountants is delivered to the same high standards globally.
