Would you know where to turn if you faced an ethical dilemma, and do you know what your responsibilities are? CIMA ethics assistant Camilla Hedborg explains the help available.
The CIMA code of ethics can help you navigate through ethical challenges. CIMA has produced a new animation to highlight the importance of professional ethics.
All CIMA students and members are committed to upholding the highest ethical and professional standards, and students who fail to uphold these standards risk losing their professional standing.
Ensuring that you are familiar with the code’s fundamental principles, your organisation’s policies, and up to date knowledge of related regulation and law is a requirement of professional practice.
Upcoming report
The animation could not have come at a better time. Based on the results from a recent survey for the coming CGMA ethics report, there may now be greater pressure within organisations to act unethically.
The survey – based on nearly 2000 CIMA management accountants worldwide of whom 65% were students – is a repeat of CIMA’s 2008 survey. It shows that while there is a welcome acknowledgement of the importance of ethical business practices and that more than 90% of respondents said they recognise that either ‘part’ or a ‘major part’ of their role contributes to managing ethical performance, one in three management accountants globally may feel pressure to compromise their organisation’s ethical standards.
Global guidance line
CIMA has joined with Expolink to provide an anonymous and confidential globally available helpline to support and prompt you in deciding next steps with regard to an ethical concern, and guide you to other potential areas of support.
