It’s not easy to know when the time is right to start looking elsewhere. Here are a few handy pointers.
Middle managers who are looking to progress should always keep one eye on their next job opportunity. The best time to seek a new job is while you are still relatively enthusiastic and confident in your current one. But don’t make the mistake of thinking you must leave simply because you have been somewhere for a few years.
If your current company is right for you and the prospects for progression are encouraging, don’t risk losing it all for the sake of change. Whether you decide to stay or go, it’s important to analyse your CV objectively in order to chart your career path and establish yourself as a high flyer. Consider where you want to be in five years and how you might get there. First, you must decide whether you want to stay where you are and seek promotion internally or to look for opportunities elsewhere.
If you’re looking to move on:
- Push the boundaries. Don’t be timid – applying for jobs at a more senior level than your current position could be a good way to make a quick leap.
- Reinvent yourself. Think about any bad habits that you may have developed in your current role, such as letting administrative tasks slip. Make a fresh start and focus on small improvements.
- Get out and meet your new colleagues and contacts. This will help you to establish yourself in the talent pool.
Move up without moving on
Sometimes you may have to leave your current job to ascend the corporate ladder - but not always. Here are our tips for securing a promotion.
- Do your homework. Internal promotions often rely on your ability to show qualities such as leadership, loyalty to the organisation and a good understanding of the wider business. Get involved in company initiatives such as charity events. Get to know colleagues in other teams.
- Single yourself out. Make yourself known as an ambitious self-starter who wants to progress. Approach the HR manager or a senior mentor. Discuss with them your interest in a promotion.
- Keep at it. Don’t be disheartened if your efforts aren’t rewarded immediately. Demonstrate perseverance by agreeing with your line manager a list of the key skills that you need to acquire – and demonstrating them consistently.
