The CIMA certificate in business accounting (CBA) opens the door to diverse opportunities in the financial sector and broader enterprise. The CBA is suited to those who have already completed Institute of Bankers in Ireland exams, for which CIMA exemptions accrue. 

The CBA is also suited to those who wish to attain a solid grounding in the area of accounting and finance and how these relate practically to the business world, providing an understanding of the uses of accounting information in planning, controlling and decision-making.

Crucially, the CBA is an internationally recognised qualification with real credentials in the fundamentals of business and finance. With its focus on management accounting, the CIMA CBA offers the most relevant financial qualification for business.

On completion of the CBA you will have the option of progressing to undertake the CIMA professional qualification, which can be achieved via a number of study routes, tailored to individual needs. 

Institute of Bankers members’ exemptions

For Institute of Bankers members interested in studying for the CBA, the following exemptions have been agreed for candidates who have previously completed the Institute of Bankers Ireland qualifications:

Bachelor of financial services (BFS)

When registered as a CIMA student those candidates holding a BFS qualification are eligible for the following five exemptions:

  • C02 – fundamentals of financial accounting
  • C03 – fundamentals of business mathematics 
  • C04 – fundamentals of business economics
  • C05 – fundamentals of ethics, corporate governance and business law 
  •  E1 – enterprise operations (professional qualification).

Complete one exam (C01 - fundamentals in management accounting) to gain the CIMA certificate in business accounting.

Complete three exams (C01 - fundamentals in management accounting, P1 - performance operations, F1 - financial operations) to gain the CIMA diploma in management accounting (the operational level of the professional qualification).

University diploma in financial services (formally joint financial services diploma).

When registered as a CIMA student, those candidates holding the university diploma in financial services are eligible when registered as a CIMA student to the following two exemptions:

  • C02 - fundamentals of financial accounting
  • C04 – fundamentals of business economics.

Complete three exams to gain the CIMA certificate in business accounting. (C01 - fundamentals in management accounting, C03 - fundamentals in business mathematics and C05 - fundamentals of ethics, corporate governance and business law).

What CIMA delivers

The CBA syllabus is divided into five modules that are designed to provide you with a solid grounding in the different areas of accounting, and how these relate practically to the business world.  It provides you with an understanding of the uses of accounting information in planning, controlling and business decision making.

Flexible approach to study

CIMA offers a number of study options that provide CIMA CBA candidates with the flexibility to progress at their own pace, by planning their studies around their work and personal circumstances. Institute of Bankers members can start their CBA studies at any time, from any location.

All CBA exams are computer based and can be taken in any order, at any time. There are ten CIMA computer based exam centres located throughout Ireland. The study options that are available:

  • online study material from CIMAstudy.com
  • revision seminars (one per module)  
  • hard copy books.

The long term

On completion of the certificate in business accounting, you will have a solid grounding in the basics of business and finance, and an internationally recognised qualification.

You will also have the option of progressing to undertake the CIMA professional qualification, which can be achieved via a number of study routes, tailored to individual needs.

CIMA diploma in Islamic finance

The CIMA diploma in Islamic finance (CDIF) is being offered at a time when the Irish government is positioning the IFSC as a western hub for wholesale Islamic finance services.

MSc in strategic management accounting

UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School, in close association with CIMA, offer a one year full time MSc in strategic management accounting which will commence early September 2013.

On successful completion of this programme you will gain:

  • exemptions to all of CIMA's exams (except T4 part B)
