About the app

What is the FM app?

The FM app is a digital publication. You can download to your tablet or smartphone from the Apple App Store, Google Play or Amazon. 

It contains all your usual Financial Management magazine content, plus additional exclusive app-only features and articles.

How much does it cost?

The app is free to download.  

Why has the app been launched?

CIMA has always looked at ways to embrace change and innovation.

Until recently, all members and students were mailed ten copies of Financial Management magazine a year. Recent research has shown that members and students would like to receive content digitally. Launching the app allows us to increase the amount and frequency of content accessible to both members and students.

From January 2014, all members and exam complete students will receive six print editions of the magazine a year (bimonthly), while all students and members will be able to download 12 editions of the FM app per year (monthly).

How does the content differ from that of the print magazine?

The app version will contain all the usual print content, plus additional app-exclusive content. This will include features, longer versions of magazine articles, videos, active infographics, photo galleries and additional resource material.

How do I navigate my way around the app?

The app is intuitive, making it very straightforward to access the content. As with all apps, you can move through articles by swiping the screen left and right, and should scroll down to read.

At the front of the app there is a page explaining how to access all the content, as well as how to share articles with friends and colleagues. You can download it for reference.

Can I save articles to read later?

Yes. You can use the bookmark facility to highlight pieces you want to return to later.

Can I search the content in the app?

Yes. You will be able to search across all the issues you have downloaded.

How does the app link to CIMA MY JOBS?

On certain articles throughout the app, you will be able to tap an icon and search the latest jobs within CIMA MY JOBS. A selection of job results will appear in your app. If you click on one of the jobs, details will appear in the web browser of your device.

Can I access previous FM app content?

Yes. Previous issues of the FM app will be stored on your device automatically as each issue is live and you can access them at any time. However you must ensure you carry out good ‘housekeeping’ on your device to ensure you have enough space to download subsequent issues. You may need to delete older issues to allow future ones to be downloaded.

What if I have difficulty viewing the app on my smartphone?

The app is specifically built for iPad usage which is a tablet and is therefore optimised for this platform. It is accessible on smartphones but currently is not built using responsive design for that specific platform. It does include a ‘pinch and zoom’ functionality which will help users view the content. The best option currently for smartphone users is to access the web version: http://fmapp.cimaglobal.com/seven/financialprototype/index.html 

Technical questions

How do I update my app each month?

Your FM app will automatically update when new content is published at the start of every month. Simply click on the FM icon (see right) on your tablet or mobile to access the new content.

The first time you download the app, you can also opt to receive a notification each time a new issue is available.

Please note, each issue of CIMA FM will take up between 50 and 120 mb, once downloaded this will reside in your device storage and each subsequent issue download will add to the amount of space taken up on your device. Please ensure you have enough free space on your device before downloading. If you go to your Settings on your phone, you can see your data usage for reference.

Should I update the operating system my phone uses?

Yes, the app is optimised to work on Android and iOS latest operating systems, however it will work with older operating systems, iOS 7 and above and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and above.

To get the best performance and features from your Android smartphone or tablet or from your iphone or ipad you should make sure you're always running the very latest software available for it.

How do I find out what operating system my phone uses?

Instructions to determine which operating system version is running on your Android phone:

  1. Turn on your Android phone
  2. Touch the Menu key 
  3. Go to ‘settings’
  4.  Find and touch ‘about phone’ 
  5. Select ‘software information’ 
  6. Scroll to ‘Android version’ (it should be on the very top)
  7. Android version should list your software version as a number (e.g., 2.2.1)

Instructions to determine which operating system version is running on your Android tablet:

  1. Turn on your Android tablet (e.g., Samsung Galaxy Tab)
  2. Touch the Menu key 
  3. Go to ‘settings’
  4.  Find and touch ‘about device’ (it should be on the bottom)
  5. Look for ‘firmware version’ 
  6. Your ‘firmware version’ should have a number just beneath it (e.g. 2.2.1
  7. This number is your software version (e.g., 2.2.1)

Instructions to determine which operating system version is running on your iPhone or iPad:

  1. Tap Settings
  2. Go to ‘General’
  3. Go to ‘About’
  4. View ‘Version’

How do I update my operating system?

Instructions to update your operating system for Android phones or tablets:

  1. As a precautionary measure it is good practice to back up your data such as contacts and photos. The upgrade should not affect your data but there is no guarantee.
  2. Navigate to the Setting menu of your device. On most Android devices this can be done via the app menu or notification bar. Typically the Setting app will have a cog or spanner logo.
  3. Software
  4. Scroll down the Settings menu and click on 'About Phone' or 'About Tablet'. If you have a tabbed settings menu then this will appear in the 'general' section.
  5. The menu can vary slightly from device to device but click the 'Software Update' or similar button. This section of the menu will also detail which version of Android your device is running.
  6. Your phone or tablet will now search for an available update. If you are taken to another menu, select the 'Software update check' button or similar.

    If an update is available for your device then you will be asked whether you wish to install it. If you select yes then the system will download and install the new software and reboot.

    Note: Your device may require a Wi-Fi connection to search for an update. We also recommend downloading the software over Wi-Fi because the file size can be large.

    Software

Instructions to update your operating system for iPhone or iPad:

Before you update, back up your device to iCloud or iTunes. If you use your device's Personal Hotspot for your computer's Internet connection, update your device wirelessly or connect your computer to another network. The easiest way to update your device is wirelessly, also called ‘over the air.’ Here’s how:

  1. Plug in your device to a power source.
  2. Tap Settings > General > Software Update.
  3. Tap Download and Install. Updates might download automatically while your device is connected to Wi-Fi and a power source.
  4. Tap Install, or tap Later to install the update later. If you use a passcode, you'll need to enter it before installing the update.

If you have some free space, but not enough to update over the air, you can either update using iTunes or delete content manually from your device. Whether you use iTunes or update over the air, you'll have the same amount of free space on your device after you update.

Some iOS software updates aren't available as over-the-air updates. VPN or proxy connections might prevent your device from contacting the iOS update servers.

What do I do if the app freezes/crashes?

Force quit the app completely, log back in and try to view. If not delete the app, re-download and install. 

Devices

Which devices will the app be available on?

The app is iOS and Android compatible, although it operate best on an iPad. It is accessible on Apple, Android and Kindle tablets and smartphones. Please note the app is specifically built for iPad usage and is optimised for this platform. It is accessible on smartphones and now includes a ‘pinch and zoom’ functionality.

Android devices

  • See a list of Android devices that will be able to find the app from the Google Playstore. Please note you must be on the latest operating system to be able to download the app (see ‘Operating System’ below).

The following devices are not supported:. 

  • Google Nexus 7 version 1
  • HTC Sensation XE
  • Windows phones
  • Blackberry

Why is the app not on Windows phones and BlackBerry?

The app is not currently available on Windows or Blackberry due to the small market share of both devices. However, we are committed to ensuring content is available as widely as possible and will review this as an ongoing basis.

What if I don’t have a tablet / smartphone?

If you are unable to access the FM app via tablet or smartphone, you can access the web version viahttp://fmapp.cimaglobal.com/seven/financialprototype/index.html 

Operating system

A minimum of iOS7 or Android 4.2 is required on your device in order to run the app. 

How do I delete issues I have read? (I have no room to download new ones.)

Every device is different. However we suggest you click on 'library' on top left menu, touch and hold on the issue that you want to delete and then press 'delete'.
