CIMA Canada Celebration of Cricket

08 July 2008

Toronto was host to the fourth annual Chartered Institute of Management Accountants Canada (CIMA) Mayor's Trophy Cricket Tournament, which took place on 28 June 2008 at Sunnybrook Park. The CIMA Canada Mayor's trophy, Celebration of Cricket is a community event used to showcase cricket and provide an opportunity for CIMA members, their families, and friends to have a day of entertainment, along with the wider community.

Since its launch in 2005, the event has grown in popularity and regularly attracts widespread media attention and corporate sponsorship. CIMA's Deputy President Aubrey Joachim attended the event along with other dignitaries such as the Toronto Mayor, David Miller, Police Chief William Blair, GO Transit CEO Gary McNeil, and Loblaw Chair Galen Weston amongst others.

This year, CIMA Canada Mayor's trophy event supported The Cricket across The Pond scholarship programme aimed at empowering and mentoring young people (predominantly from low income neighbourhoods) through the game of cricket. CIMA partnered with the Royal Bank of Canada as well as other corporate and media institutions to raise funds for the programme. This year the programme will sponsor a summer tour of United Kingdom by a group of junior cricketers. They will be given the opportunity to train at the Chessington Cricket Club and will be hosted by David Berry, the Mayor of Kingston-upon-Thames.

Glynn Lowth, CIMA President, said, 'This year's CIMA Canada Mayor's trophy was an outstanding success, and we are pleased to see the tournament has been so popular with the community and attracting support from a broader range of CIMA partners including the big four accounting firms.

'CIMA's participation with the cricket scholarship programme demonstrates CIMA's strong community links and we hope the team will enjoy this great opportunity to train at one of the world's leading cricket clubs.'
