Three sixth form students from Plymouth College have won the CIMA Management Competition 2004/05, an annual competition designed to develop the business leaders of the future. In a nail-biting final in London, four teams from across the country presented their recommendations to a panel of judges.
Jonathan Shields, Head of Sixth Form, Plymouth College, said, 'This competition has caught the imagination of my students. It has enabled them to be creative and develop an awareness of marketing and finance. To see the team work under pressure and reach this standard is exhilarating.' Other teams came from The Sixth Form College, Farnborough and Waingels College, Woodley with another Plymouth College scooping third prize.
The CIMA Management Competition is an annual, national competition in partnership with learn.co.uk targeting 16-18 year olds in schools and colleges in the UK. It is designed to give students real-world business experience and the opportunity to develop entrepreneurial skills. The entrants gain valuable experience in developing their final recommendations based on three different options and ensure these final recommendations cover the key business areas of finance, human resources, marketing and external factors. This in turn develops their teamwork, communication and presentation skills.
CIMA once again set an exciting challenge, this year asking students to submit recommendations to a fictitious leading sports manufacturer that has developed a new sports shoe with an embedded pedometer and heart monitor. All the teams have had to produce innovative business plans for the product including financial and marketing strategies.
Ian Christison, President, CIMA, said, 'This curriculum based initiative is the perfect introduction to the world of business by encouraging entrepreneurship and teamwork. It is important for the business leaders of today to develop the business leaders of tomorrow and this is a fun and rewarding way of doing it.'
